Our First Egg!

The kids caught one of our chickens laying an egg! They have finally started giving back, and our homestead is producing some food. It's going to be so fun to add egg collecting to our daily chores. And even better to quit buying eggs.

Here she is! The most beautiful hen I've ever seen. It was probably pretty rude of the kids to pick her up as soon as she finished laying, but she seemed pretty calm and pleasant. Maybe she was proud of herself too.

This is why we've been doing all this work for these several months. This one little egg. We shall cook it and split it 5 ways tonight for dinner. (Noemi can't eat it yet.)
Isn't it beautiful? I feel accomplished.

  3. Love it! We just started keeping hens this summer as well, and a couple months ago I did a 'first egg' post too. There's nothing more exciting than getting something useful back from creatures you've carefully nurtured since their first few days of life. Unfortunately my two year old was as excited about the first egg as I was and it was tragically crushed when I gave in to her pleas to hold it. We've had lots more since then though. The thrill of collecting them from the coop still hasn't worn off...I don't know as it ever will. Next up, beekeeping! ;) When that homesteading bug bites, it's hard to resist!

    1. It is so much fun hunting for eggs every day. I'm sorry about your first egg, but what a cute story! We're thinking about bees next, too! It must be the next natural step. I love this life.

  6. I absolutely can't wait for a 'first egg moment'. :) Feels like a have a long way to go, as chickens aren't even legal (YET) in my city limits, but I'm determined that our backyard will one day be home to hens.
